Nagashi-Somen (流しそうめん)

We Japanese usually dish up the Soumen(vermicelli) to the plate and eat.

However, it eats for the Nagashi-Soumen by a quite different method.

It can be said that the Nagashi-Soumen is a kind of attraction or summer event.

I explain the Nagashi-Soumen.

First of all, we make the water slider from the bamboo.

Soumen is thrown into the water slider made of the bamboo that with water.

And, Soumen that has flowed is catched with chopsticks.

We eat the Soumen with the noodle soup at the end.

The Nagashi-Soumen is one of the poetic events of summer of Japan.

It tries once by all means.

The season of Soumen(the vermicelli) is almost three months from June to August.

Soumen(the vermicelli) is delicious even if eating all the year round.

However, it is convinced that most Japanese eat the vermicelli in summer.

Therefore, it eats the vermicelli in most regions in Japan only at the time of
summer.

In winter, we who live in Nagasaki are eating “JiGoku Soumen”.

  • How to eat “JiGoku Soumen”
  1. The vermicelli is put in the boiling hot water.
  2. When the vermicelli boils up, it eats with the soy sauce as it is,without cooling
    it by water.
